The Dark Descent of Elizabeth Frankenstein

Hello Darlings!

I am back again with a review to kick off my series of posts. This book was given to me for Christmas. I have been meaning to read it but I kept putting on my physical TBRs. The cover of this book is beautiful and instantly drew me in.

The Dark Descent of Elizabeth Frankenstein is a stand alone novel written by Kiersten White. She also wrote the Conquerors series that I love. This book tells the misfortune of Elizabeth. She is a child that is sold to the noble family Frankenstein. During flash blacks we learn that She is sold to be companion to the troubled and strange Victor Frankenstein. The book kicks off with her that she is hunting for Victor since he left her at his family home for his studies. She takes her companion slash friend with her as well. Everything seems to be going in the right direction until they return home.

This story had a great plot. You get to follow through flash backs how Elizabeth came to be with the Frankenstein’s. Also see how Elizabeth decides that even though she was sold to the family that she can create her own fate. If you are thinking that this book is fast paced and has big monster fight then I am going to spoil you by saying that it doesn’t. White gave a mediocre ending for what happens with Victor.

Elizabeth is a great main character. She is a well fleshed out and you can truly empathize with her. Victor is more of a tall, dark, brooding, and a sociopath. I feel like that Victor could have been a much better villain if White had divided into sharing more behind the scenes of him. I enjoyed the scenes with Adam and Heidi. I felt terrible for Elizabeth’s poor companion.

The title of the book is honestly the darkest part of this book. Elizabeth didn’t grow enough as a character for me to truly enjoy her. The book ran on a slow burn. I found myself rooting for Elizabeth to go dark side but that didn’t happen. Honestly, I was disappointed because that’s truly what the story needed. The plot was mediocre at best. The characters had greater potential. I don’t think that I would reread this book. I give this book a 2.5 out 5 stars. I don’t think that I would recommend this book unless you aren’t really into horror and would like to dip their fingers into the gothic horror genre. What are your thoughts?
