Hi Darlings,
I hope that you all had a really good Christmas time with your loved ones if you observe the holiday or just got the day(s) off! I had a good time with my family and I am so blessed with the books I got for Christmas. I dived straight into one of two of the YA thriller books that I got; which happens to be There’s Someone In Your House by Stephanie Perkins.

There’s Someone Inside Your House is about a teenage girl named, Makani Young. She recently was sent to live with her grandmother in Osborne, NE. In Osborne, Makani is still struggling to adapt because she is punishing herself still because of what happened in Hawaii. The one light spot for her is that Ollie Larsson, a teenage outsider like herself, are getting closer to becoming something more. As their relationship is growing their classmates are being picked up off one by one by a serial killer.
So let’s talk about the good stuff that I like about this book. I really like the cover of this book. It did it’s job of attracting itself to me.
- I liked that the main character is a girl of color and that her close friend, Darby, is a transgender. I think that it’s important that young adults see more of these amazing characters in fiction. We see too much blandness in terms of diversity.
- I enjoyed that Makani is strong girl lead that actually listens to her gut because, yes, this is a slasher book! Only the weak get bleeders!
- I enjoyed that the musical that the first victim was going to be participating was Sweeney Todd! I love that musical. I liked that
- That it wasn’t just girls that were getting slashed. I hate that almost every time we get a serial killer that goes after the girls.
- That you didn’t see David being the killer. It really was a blind side, and that his reasoning wasn’t something stupid like a slight of hand. It really was a good psychotic reason. You also didn’t know their connection till the very end.
- That Ollie and Makani had good chemistry and didn’t have that otherworldly connection that sometimes make me want to toss the book away.
- The book did talk about athletic hazing and online bullying that is all to real.
Now Let’s talk about what I didn’t like.
- This book isn’t focused on Makani trying to figure out the killer as much as her relationship with Ollie. She was more boy focused. The murders and other events felt like the life filler for her.
- I didn’t like that we had to wait till 75% to find out why Makani was tossed to her grandmother in NE. I mean honestly the girl was being hazed cruelly and she ended up cutting her ex-best friend’s pony tail off because the girls hair was stuck to her face. It wasn’t her fault the girl decided to run to the ocean.
- Her parents. Her parents are monsters and I am confident that there is some kids out there that have these kinds of parents.
- My number one rule is trust the instinct. Katie didn’t have to die if she would have just trusted her instincts the first time. There would have been time for her and her brothers to have made it to safety possibly because David wasn’t in the house then.
My overall thoughts are that I enjoyed this book. It only took me a day to read this book. I had a slow day at work and was able to take advantage of the slowness. I liked the main character more towards the end of the book. I do want to say that because of her intense focus on making sure Ollie was her boyfriend reminds me of all the cliche slasher films in the world. If someone is trying to kill me I wouldn’t be trying to secure a boyfriend and that would have held true even when I was in high school. Because of this the book was knocked down one full point. I felt that Perkins should have focused a bit more on the murders and less on teen romance. For what it is I thought the book flowed well, the characters are well rounded, and I liked how the book ended not leaving you hanging over a cliff. I give this book a 4 out 5 stars. I recommend this book to you if you like teen slasher books! Let me know your thoughts below!
