Hi Blogtober’s!
Today I am going to share my review of a Lover Unbound. If you are wondering what Throw Back reviews are? The answer is that these are books that I’ve already read before my blog and booktube channel, and I never reviewed them. I will try and keep the reviews within their specific book and not from the progress of the latest books. All these reviews will have some kinds of spoilers so read at your own risk. So let’s get started!
Lover Unbound is the fifth installment of the Black Dagger Brotherhood series by J.R. Ward. This book is centered around the brother, Vishous and his shellan, Jane. The book opens up with a really cool sequence that dives into Jane’s childhood as sad that it is. You get to head right in to how she is a surgeon and how that Vishous do circumstances is brought into the ER. We are introduced more into the vampire abilities and how their compulsion functions and more anatomy differences from humans. We also meet the first LGBTQA+ character because Vishous is bisexual who enjoys S&M. She showed a clear understanding of how to represent his sexuality and his tastes within this book.
To be honest at first I really liked Jane and Vishous. I think they are a really good fit. She is truly a good equal for him. What I over the top despise is what Ward did to Jane. Like this was crazy how she had Jane become a ghost that’s corporal when Vishous touches her for an undetermined period of time. WHY DIDN’T SHE JUST BRING HER BACK TO LIFE LIKE MARY like three books back?! No one. I mean no one would have blamed her doing that. That is a basic trope for the romance genre to be honest. It took so much will power not to just chuck the book at the floor. Carpeted floor I might add but still. I also didn’t fail to notice that Jane looks exactly like Ward herself from the back of the paper book I was reading. I couldn’t help but think about cruel it is to create a character that has been abused and tortured to be paired with a self insertion character that looks like themselves. I was just disappointed and that knocked this book down a star for me.
It seemed as though despite what I think was a horrible choice of bringing back Jane the author did pull it together where they could have a happy ending. The storyline was good, the characters developed nicely, and I liked how the author flowed in the interactions to go on to the next book. I do recommend this book to you! I give it a 4 out 5 stars.
