It only takes a second for life to go to heck-in-a-hand-basket!

Hi everyone! Welcome back to my blog. I am reviewing a sweet first book in a series. I saw this book while scrolling through the Kindle Unlimited page for free Halloween reads. I thought why not! I am so glad I didn’t pass it by. Amy Boyles provides a funny and interesting first book to her Sweet Tea Witch series.

This book kicks off with the main character Pepper Dunn. She has a horrible day of loosing her job, her boyfriend calling it quits, her roommates kicking her out, being hunted by a weirdo warlock, accused of murder and finding out she is a witch! Finding out your a witch might be cool if you weren’t being hunted by a warlock determined to kidnap or kill you on spot. Thankfully she has a trusty sidekick, Mattie, who guides her to a warded witch city where she is safe or so she thought. Because when she gets to town she is accused of murdering a warlock and with the help of some new found family and Mr. Sexy Axel Reign – a warlock and private detective, she plans to discover who the real murderer is.

Southern Witch is faced paced but well developed. This book is a cozy read and has a take on witches I hadn’t read before. I think that it is so cool that Pepper’s gift is that she can hear animals and has the ability to pair animals with their witch or warlock counterpart. For a lot of the book Pepper is really relatable and I love her. Although at the beginning with her roommates and boyfriend I wouldn’t have just let that go but that’s a personal thing.

Anyways, I like how Boyles fleshes out Pepper’s character and allows for her to grow as the story goes on. Pepper is quite demur and shy in the beginning but as the story takes place she starts to find herself. The story was written this year but tone of the story reminds a lot of 1998 writing from screenwriter Constance Burge which is what made me fall for this book. I like writing that has a styling sort of like fanfiction. That type of writing is more charismatic written and draws me in. Boyles did an excellent job of keeping the murder hidden through out the story. I honestly thought it was another character. I give it a four out five stars for its originality, plot, character development, and me wanting to go onto read the second book, Southern Spells!

Thanks for reading! I hope you enjoy this review. If you did please like this post and follow for more great reviews and other content. Let me know in the comment down below if you’d read this book or not?
