Picnic At Hanging Rock is an original six episode tv series by Amazon. It is based on a book by the same name. The tv series is set in the 1800’s when a women’s college took an outing to Mount Diogenes also called the Hanging Rock. At the outing three of the school girls and a governess go missing. The show centers around the hysteria that happens with the women missing.
The show starts off with Natalie Dormer as a conwoman pretending to be widow Mrs. Appleyard that has arrived in a small town around Victoria, Australia. She purchases a manor. The show fast forwards to where she has turned the manor into a finishing school for young ladies. There are four governesses that assist her in teaching the young ladies.
What I did like!
Natalie Dormer is sensational. I adored her in the Tudors and in Game of Thrones. So I was excited to see her. I loved the props and costumes. The production team did a really good job. I really liked it. I enjoyed the basic plot of the series.
What confused me?
There was a lot of plot bunnies running around. I know that this is based on a short story by the same name. While the production team took liberties they cut out a bit too much.
- Why Mrs. Appleyard and Sarah had such a tense relationship? Sure, Appleyard came from an orphanage too but that was made clear till near the end of the series.
- Why didn’t Irma explain what had happened to Miranda, Marion, and their teacher?
- Why was Sarah cutting herself?
- How did Sarah not recognize Bertie when she dreamed about him?
- Why did Mrs. Appleyard do what she did in the end?
Despite these questions, I think that this series is hypnotizing and makes you wonder what was really going on. I know that through an interview that the series was supposed to dive into the characters rather than plot from the original story. I just wish that they would given us more information. I would like a second season of the series if it explained what had happened. I think that would be amazing. This series has great drama, suspense, and a fantastic cast. I give this series a 4 out 5 stars. If you check it out I don’t think you’d be disappointed. If you have watched or plan to watch let me know down below if you can answer any of my questions. Till next time!
