Kiss Her Goodbye by Susan Gee is a thriller about a teenage girl at college in England. She killed her best friend and she is trying to make sure that it says a secret.
The book taglines are misleading. Hayley wasn’t best friends with Kirsten Green. They barely knew each other. As in they had a few talks by a mutual spot at the weir near the river. There are two point of views that are shared through out the book. Both of them are different and bringing a lot to the book.
Hayley Reynolds has a personality that fits the dark triad – a person having the traits of narcissism, Machiavellianism, and psychology. During the book she is trying to feel something other than the paranoia from the murder. She falls short and this causes her to act out. Her family life is horrible.
DI Beverley Samuels is a recovering domestic victim who is struggling with work and her personal life. She is a good detective and her past brings her determination to make sure that Hayley doesn’t have the same fate as the young girl that haunts her.
The book has a good plot where a young teenage girl is a killer and has the police wrapped around her finger. Hayley never really grows in this story this is because of her psychopathic personality. However, Beverley does grow and finds a way to put the past behind her. One of the things that I think was missing is Hayley actually addressing her sexuality. It is seems like that is something Gee was wanting to go into but didn’t. Also there was an inconsistency at the end, where Samuel’s see Hayley wearing Kirsten’s locket; that earlier in the book the locket was a plain one but then in that scene there is suddenly some initials on the locket. This inconsistency caused the ending scene to be a little out of place. Since this is prior to publication that might have been changed. I do recommend this book and I give it a four out of five stars. Please let me know down below if you are going to pick it up or not! Also let me know what recent thriller have you read?
