Dead in the Water by Denise Swanson

Dead in the Water is a cozy mystery set in the fictional town of Scrumble River. The main characters are a pregnant school psychologist Skye and her chief of police husband, Wally. The story takes off with a tornado ravaging their town and surrounding area. Skye and Wally’s House is destroyed causing them to seek assistance. This is where Wally’s Dad, Carson, comes in and helps them out. As Wally is out checking out for a missing government official to which he finds dead. Wally and Skye try to find out who the killer is before someone’s next.

The cover is pretty and caught my attention. I didn’t realize that this book was actually book 20 in a series. All I saw on the back was that it said it was a first in a new series. It wasn’t until I took a more focused look at the cover that it made me search to see if it was part of another series. Sure enough I found the main series. To me I felt like it was misleading and it dropped the rating one point for me. I will say that the book did a good job of reintroducing the characters. I had a hard time truly enjoying Skye’s dialogue because she seems kind of child-like and whiny. I liked Wally better and his character was just a bit more relatable.

I will let you know that it will be 75% of the book before it even starts to focus on the murder. Wally gets kidnapped and I kinda felt like Skye was running around with her head facing the sky. However the plot was good. I didn’t like the one randomly thrown in sex scene and it made me feel like when you are watching a movie and they toss in a filler sex scene when it shouldn’t have happened. the antagonist that was revealed was good. You didn’t see it coming. I thought for sure it was someone else. I do recommend the book and I will be looking for the first book in the series. I want to give Skye another chance.
