Assume nothing. Period.
I thought this book would be about a jealous ex-lover trying to hurt her ex-husbands new fiancée. I was definitely wrong.
This book starts out with two different personalities. The first is Nellie. She is a naïve mid-twenty something year old woman who has met an older man becoming smitten. The second voice is Vanessa. She is a bitter alcoholic who appears to be on the verge of collapse. As the book is getting closer to the climax you are stupefied as it is reveled that the entire time you’ve been reading Vanessa trailing after her replacement to find out that Nellie’s point of view is actually Vanessa’s from when she’d first met Richard, her now ex-husband. She reveals the domestic abuse and her plot to leave him by making it his idea. I was right that she had been following Richard’s fiancée just not to hurt her but to save her from him. Also that his fiancée, Emma, is actually someone from her past.
I loved the style of writing the authors share. It was an easy read. It only took me a day to read this book. I think that it is a good edition to the thriller genre right after Gone Girl. This is truly the book that is equal to it. The characters were well written except for Maureen, Richard’s sister.
What I didn’t like about the book is that near the end of the book when Richard is getting his just desserts the authors forgot about a plot device. I honestly believe that this was apart of a previous script in which Maureen was going to be the antagonist. Where she had orchestrated all the horrible things in Vanessa and Richard’s marriage because she herself was in love with him. However, what we are served is Vanessa gives Maureen her marriage jewelry and Maureen slips on the wedding rings saying “For safe keeping”. This results in Vanessa having an epiphany where she realizes that Maureen supports his behavior, cares more about him than a brother, and aided him in what he did. Vanessa decides to let it go and walks away. Why share that if the character wasn’t supposed to do anything about it? To me the Maureen angle would have been far more interesting than a simple controlling husband. But anyways, I really did enjoy this book. I give it a 4/5 stars and I recommend it to you.
