The Woman in the Window by A.J. Finn is about a woman named Anna Fox. She has agoraphobia which has lead to her keeping an eye on her New York neighborhood. Everything seems to be normal till a new family moves in and she sees something she really shouldn’t have.
I liked the cover of the book. It gives me the thriller vibe, and made me want to read the book. The book is written in her point of view. To which you will find out most of the time almost every chapter ends up with her drinking merlot, popping her medication, and promptly passing out. This was truly annoying me because I feel like the story could have been richer if that hadn’t been the case. When she isn’t drunk and not musing about wanting a drink she actually is a good relatable character. Anna was a meh main character. This truly felt like a rewrite of Girl on the Train movie, and I actually pictured Emily Blunt as Anna in my brain. We meet Anna who separated from her husband & daughter from what we think is her agoraphobia- that developed 10 months ago, has become an alcoholic that drinks with her medication for her condition, and has turned into a watcher of her neighborhood. She watches a new family move in. She meets the wife and mother of the family Jane Russell. After several events later she witnesses her murder. This turns into a nightmare for her as no one believes her, and what’s worse a woman is claiming that she is Jane Russell!
If you think this book is going to have even paced flow you’d be wrong because I was! The book drags on till you get to like 85% through it and then it speeds up. I was more than three quarters through the book and I had no idea what had caused her illness. We find out that 10 months ago she’d agreed to go on a family vacation with her daughter to a ski lodge in Vermont. This vacation was spoiled because it was also when they were going to tell their 5 yr old daughter they were separating. Ana was the cause of the separation due to her cheating with her co-worker. Their daughter wants to go home and they head back despite the snow storm setting in. While on the road her and her husband get into a tug of war with her cell phone that her lover and co-worker, Wesley, is calling on. Anna not paying attention drives them off the road.
When she finally sees the murder and she tail spins. She realizes that she has let everyone go since the death of her husband and daughter and that the only people in her life are her psychiatrist, her ex-lover – that’s has been trying to leave her, and a physical therapist. They don’t believe her about the murder and she realizes that she has to help herself. In doing so she makes her life more difficult with the police. I still can’t believe who the murder was for this book. It was unexpected and I was actually ok with the reasoning behind it. I give this book a 4 out 5 stars for it’s somewhat originality and that it did wrap itself up nicely. Letting you know that Anna has finally decided to help herself and finally live instead of just watching her life go by while watching others.
