This is a story about a teenage girl who was shipped away to a catholic all girls school after getting into a fight with two boys. She comes back and the boy she was defending that day has grown up. She falls back into her crush which results in them start dating when he finally takes her to his house. All starts out well but then the house starts to show it’s dark side. It’s a ghost story that could have been great!
I was ten pages into this book and I could tell the author was trying way to hard to sell the idea of irresistible attraction. I can tell you that if you choose to read this book that you’ll be fully aware that Gavin is tall, dark headed, muscular, and has chest hair. Lauren has written Delilah into a sex crazed teenage girl who only gets worried about her love interest when SHE gets attacked by the house.
One of the things I hated is that the book is set in 2015 where the gothic genre is really exploding and still is today. Throughout the book Delilah is shown to have a love of the gothic aesthetic but tells herself she is a freak. I don’t think this a true reference of a 17 – 18 yr old today.
The book only started getting good after the house starts acting up. Otherwise it’s filled with Delilah’s waxing of Gavin’s body and Gavin’s feeling of worthlessness. Sadly, Gavin’s pov in 75% of the book reminds me of Jack from Emma Donoghue’s “The Room”. I would have loved to know about the spirits that had inhabited the house and took care of Gavin. A major plus was that the ending was wrapped up in a bow for the reader. I wouldn’t recommend it if you love haunted house stories.
